Horatio Caine – CSI Miami
With its very open use of filters to bathe Miami in an unrealistic orange glow, the team behind CSI:Miami have created a juggernaut in ratings, with strong numbers over its seven season run so far. But they are also partly responsible for creating a character that now has a public following that rivals the MacGyver fans of 80's. His name is Horation Caine and he is played by David Caruso.
Running a group of CSI investigators and liaising with police to capture the bad guys of the city, Horatio saves the day and does so with his trademark style. His style had many tells, one being the one liners said as the start of every episode, whilst putting his black wire frame sunglasses on, this is followed by the intro music. He always does what every hero does, but he does it in a clean cut suit. What other hero can lay claim to that?
Some of his great one liners have been captured into a You Tube video over seven minutes long (Heratio Caine One-Liners). The writers have changed a bit over the series long run, but all are informed that as much as the show may change, Horatio must not. He has a cult following and you don't mess with that, viewers vote with their remotes and tune out. As long as Miami has Horatio, nothing can bring down the city.
For David Caruso, this is his big second chance, he battled the executives back in the 90's for a pay raise when working as a cop on NYPD Blue, they wouldn't fall to his demands so he left and found very little work until CSI came along. We all deserve a second chance, and maybe if it wasn't for that long break, we wouldn't have been able to see him in such a new light, his previous characters may have tainted his chances of playing the hero.
