Little Girl Takes on World

Many have battled our seas and oceans over our short history of water travel. Many have died in pursuit of riches, new beginnings and other goals. But in saying that, countless others have pushed the envelope and done the impossible.

Then there is the elite group of youngsters who are attempting to out do each other by crossing the watery surface of earth in the least time possible at the youngest age. Many of these teens have had more experience on the water than many of us have had hot breakfasts. But they are still attempting one of the most unique voyages of their life. Were talking over nine months of solitary sailing, solo decision making and minimal chances of survival in some areas of the globe. All they need is for one error to go wrong and it could come to an end. One bolt to go missing and a snapped mast could end years of preperation. On the other hand, they may make it and become the toast of the town. I give praise to those like Jesse Martin and David Dicks.

Then there is the ignorant, the few that should be in school and not spending other peoples money in the pursuit of the title of youngest nut case to sail the globe. I'm talking of Australia's latest wishful sailor, Jessica Watson. She has a bright pink yacht called Ella's Pink Lady.

You may have heard about her first attempt to sail the globe, she left and within days had managed to run her yacht into a cargo ship, need I write that again CARGO SHIP. Those huge unmistakable floating countries carrying huge loads and capable of crushing ferries let alone small yachts. And she decided going into the cabin and not having safety alert equipment switched on was a good idea. It cost her that attempt, a mast and the respect of most of Australia.

She is attempting another trip and is currently on her trial run down the East coast of Australia. Lets hope she has seconds thoughts about going on the trip. Because there are a lot more ships out there, including pirates and the odd island. Of which she probably has the skill to run into as well. Good luck to her.
