Sausage Dogs – so wrong…

sausagedogOn the way to work this morning, I saw a man walking his sausage dog (Dachshund). We've all seen one before and marvel at the fact that a long animal with such short legs can walk. The sausage dog is not part of normal evolution as are many canines, but most of the dogs we have bred stand a purpose and are mixed for good reason. The sausage dog is an exception. It has legs that are a few inches at best and a body that is so long the belly almost scrapes the ground. It is best viewed as a designer dog gone wrong.

There should be a limit to which we allow cross breeding to occur in a manner that renders an animal in a state in which inhibits normal activity. A sausage dog is restricted to a light jog rather than a run and cannot climb stairs without difficulty and can't jump to save itself.

So I'm getting a little carried away on a topic about a bbq meat shaped canine, but it bugs me that social demands allow for the constant pursuit for the designer dog, one that wont shed hair, is small enough to fit in a handbag and retain that lifelong puppy size and wont need constant exercise and grooming. Just get a dog to suit your lifestyle and family, don't make one.
