Auctioneers

auction-hammerSpeed talkers have always gotten on my nerves, it's a combination of their incredible speed of talking and the fact their brains think that fast. As a big talker but at a normal pace, I don't buy into the conversations with speed talkers. You generally come out of it with a headache and no more smarter than before. One of the most common forms of speed talking would be the auctioneers, and for some reason the fastest ones sell cars. They scream out prices and urge the crowd to bid, but does anyone actually understand them? Most rely on roving auctioneer assistants to place bids or keep an eye on a tv screen for the current price. When there isn't much movement in the bidding they just put themselves on a loop by repeating the last bid over and over. Sometimes you might hear a price thirty times before the speed talking auctioneer moves on.

I really wonder what these guys would be like in a drive through at McDonald's. Could they spit out their order in under a second? They could probably say it five times in under ten seconds and still the operator would have no clue what they ordered.

I understand they want to rev up the crowd and try to spur them on for bids, but whats the point when you don't know what the price is? I don't and won't ever bid at auctions where the auctioneer screams out in their trademark monotone and what sounds like 5'000 words per minute.

Auctioneers don't live long lives, their hearts can't handle the strain.
