Hear Me Speak

It just doesn’t last anymore…

TVIf you go to your garage and blow away the dust, I'm sure you will find an old tv there somewhere. It probably has the turn knobs for channel and volume control and no A/V inputs to speak of. But if you plug it in, it will work. They always have and the biggest concern was occasionally a unit might lose its vertical hold and need a quick cheap repair. But the point is, they are reliable and long lasting.

Enter 21st century, products are cheaper and so is their design and reliability. It's not because we are getting worse at our skills, its two main factors at play. One: They need us to update in the future, so all products can't be built for a long life, two: its cheaper to run an assembly line with quick cheap units.

Mobiles phones are the same, ever wondered why a phone (no matter how hard you try) will never make it to the end of your two year contract without a few problems, like broken speaker, scratched screen etc. They want you to update with every new contract, it keeps their phones going, and for those who do keep their phone working, they will tempt you with useless features you can't be without. The only phone I remember that is still working 8 years on is my fathers Nokia 5110. Built like a brick but it works well, needed a new battery but the speaker, screen and housing are still intact.

We are fed products not really representative of mankinds true ability, instead were given what they can afford to make. It's a new world now, one that won't retreat from where it is now. We will forever more be throwing away perfectly good items due to upgrades or simply a dodgy speaker.
