Claim it or not
Australians have a fondness for adopting famous people who were board abroad as our own. Russell Crowe (NZ), AC/DC (Scotland) and at times we were claiming Mel Gibson (USA). I have an understanding for surroundings shaping someone into who they are, so there is a point to claiming these stars as Australians.
The topic of birth place or upbringing being the defining sculptor of someones persona and skill is as long debated as religious wars. I think the birth place has nothing to do with a persons skill set, its the blood line that counts. Someone as successful as Bill Gates could have been born in Somalia and yet if he moved to the US at a young age and had the same exposure to the schooling that he did, then he would be in the same place, despite the Somalian birth certificate. However if he didn't have the bloodlines he inherited through his parents then we may never have heard of Microsoft. Put him in Somalia for the better portion of his childhood and then you will see how the upbringing can affect ones professional outcome. The obvious disadvantages of a third world country would have blocked his ability to learn and all but stopped his exposure to computers.
Scotland (as mentioned in a previous blog) have a long standing line of successful people who together are responsible for some of those inventions we use daily. Now it's not so much the fact these people were born in Scotland then it is the environment the Scottish people live in. Some of these Scottish scholars may have been educated overseas and this would throw back to my bloodline theory.
So in saying that, enjoy the fruits of our adopted citizens but remember that family is everything.
